Veterans Expeditions at Outward Bound

Outward Bound for Veterans
Adventure and challenge, solitude, reflection, and renewal, the wilderness has always symbolized a new beginning - a place for discovery and fulfilling adventure. The Outward Bound program for Veterans provides an opportunity for camaraderie and has proven to be a powerful tool helping veterans readjust after leaving the combat zone. For more information visit Outward Bound Veteran Expeditions

Friends Helping Friends

Veterans experience unique challenges when compared with other student populations. For more information concerning veteran students, follow the links below or look in our download section.

The ACE (Ask, Care, Escort) program helps veterans find the care and help they need. The ACE Suicide Prevention Pamphlet includes warning signs, protective factors, and things you can do to assist a potentially suicidal veteran. The Department of Veteran Affairs provides the Know the Warning Signs of Suicide Pamphlet, outlining suicide warning signs. Included is the number to the toll-free National Suicide Hotline. Please visit the Friends Helping Friends website to see more information about services available to veterans

The VETS program is hosted by the Dean of Students Office, seeks to assist veterans with their transition to UNCG by providing resources to help support veterans in being successful at the university. You should have received a welcome packet when you met with a representative from the Veterans Services Office that includes information on various resources available to you. In the near future you will receive information via email about the Ally program. The Ally program links a veteran with a faculty or staff member to be a source of support and networking for veterans who have questions about campus and community resources.

Introducting "Beyond the Battlefield"- Starting today, The Huffington Post begins a ten-part series, Beyond the Battlefield -- an exploration of the physical and emotional challenges, victories and setbacks that catastrophically wounded soldiers encounter after returning home from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan. Beyond the Battlefield is the result of several months of reporting and scores of interviews by the HuffPost's veteran military correspondent, David Wood. It is a deeply-felt, hard-won and wide-ranging exploration of what it means for a soldier to suffer extraordinary, disabling wounds -- and how friends, families, and hometowns, as well as the military and medical communities, adjust and respond to the physical and emotional struggles these wounded warriors endure.
