"UNCG Cares" is a University wide program. Staff from the Dean of Students Office and the Counseling and Testing Center will modify existing presentations into a 2-3 hour professional development opportunity for UNCG faculty and staff. During the training, participants will learn about active listening, recognizing signs of distress, various types of distress for students, effective referral, and the resources available on campus to assist students. Once a participant has completed the training, he or she will be given a decal/sticker with the "UNCG Cares" logo to display in his or her office.
The goals for the program are that it will positively affect retention, increase graduation rates, and continue to promote a sense of community and support at UNCG. This proactive program will help participants recognize signs of distress and reach out to students. By creating an environment of support, students in distress may reach out before issues rise to the crisis level. This program will be advertised to students during SOAR, UNS courses, student organization meetings, etc., and to parent/family members during SOAR and in parent/family newsletters.
We will use the referral sources that are already in place with the Dean of Students Office continuing to serve as the hub. Student Academic Services, Financial Aid, Student Support Services, the Counseling and Testing Center, Leadership and Service Learning and others will continue to be active sources of assistance in meeting students' needs.
