UNCG Cares

An award-winning initiative between the
Divisions of Student Affairs
and Enrollment Services

"UNCG Cares" is a University wide program. Staff from the Dean of Students Office present a 2-3 hour professional development opportunity for UNCG faculty and staff. During the training, participants learn about active listening, recognizing signs of distress, various types of distress for students, effective referral, and the resources available on campus to assist students. Once a participant has completed the training, he or she is given a decal/sticker with the "UNCG Cares" logo to display in his or her office.

The goals for the program are that it will positively affect retention, increase graduation rates, and continue to promote a sense of community and support at UNCG. This proactive program helps participants recognize signs of distress and reach out to students. By creating an environment of support, students in distress may reach out before issues rise to the crisis level. Students are made aware of this program during SOAR, UNS courses, student organization meetings, etc., and parent/family members during SOAR and in parent/family newsletters.

The Dean of Students Office serves as the hub for referral sources already in place. Student Academic Services, Financial Aid, Student Support Services, the Counseling and Testing Center, Leadership and Service Learning and others continue to be active sources of assistance in meeting students' needs.
